GOVERNMENT FUNDING BY STUDENT FINANCE ENGLAND

 What is England’s Student Finance?

Student Loans Company provides the service Student Finance England (SFE). They provide financial assistance to pupils entering higher education in the United Kingdom on behalf of the government. Student Finance England provides financial aid for both undergraduate and graduate programmes. The financial support may consist of a loan for tuition and a loan for living expenses.

What is a tuition fee loan and how does it differ from a maintenance loan?

These loans are available to students enrolled in or planning to enrol in an undergraduate programme. A tuition loan is paid directly to the university to assist in the payment of tuition fees. A maintenance loan assists with expenses such as food, rent, and literature. The amount you can borrow is contingent on your household income, your course of study, and where you reside and attend school.

What is a postgraduate loan, and how does it differ from a loan for undergraduates?

A postgraduate loan can assist with course fees and living expenses during postgraduate study. A loan application may be submitted for a sum greater than £10,000. The loan is disbursed directly to you for payment of your course fees. There is no distinct loan for maintenance.

How do aspiring students apply for Student Financial Aid?

All postgraduate applications are submitted electronically. However, some undergraduate applications are submitted online and others require a form. Students applying as a ’Home’ student can complete the application online, whereas students applying as a’migrant worker’ must complete the PN1 form and mail it to Student Finance England. The only difference between these two applications for tuition and living expenses is the supporting evidence. If a student is unable to provide the requisite documentation, he or she may have the option to apply as a ’EU’ student, in which case only tuition fees are covered. Form EU17N is required in this situation.

How do students determine which application to submit?

If a student is applying as a ’Home’ student, they are either a British citizen, have settled status, or possess an EU passport, and have five years of residency in the UK. If a student is enrolling as a’migrant worker,’ they must hold an EU passport and have worked in the UK for at least three months prior to the start of their course, either themselves or a family member with the same surname. If a student does not meet either of these requirements, but holds an EU passport, they are eligible to submit an application for ’EU’ tuition fees only.

How long will it take to process my application, and how can I receive updates?

The average application processing time is three weeks after receipt of all required documentation; for updates, call Student Finance England at 0300 100 0031 and check their online account every few days.

How long will it take for an undergraduate application to be processed, and how can applicants receive updates?

The average processing period for a domestic or migrant worker application is eight weeks. This is based on all evidence Student Finance England has received. A few times per week, students should contact Student Finance England at 0300 100 0607 and verify their online account. The EU student application processing time (tuition fee only) is four weeks. This is based on all evidence received by Student Finance England; again, they should call 0141 243 3570 every few days.

Does Student Finance England require supporting documentation for applications?

Yes, all applications will require supporting documentation. All applications require either a passport or a government-issued photo ID.

If a pupil is married or has children, marriage and birth certificates are required. If a student has applied as a ’Home’ student with an EU passport and five years of residency in the United Kingdom, they will be required to provide proof of residency for the entire five years, such as bank statements and council tax invoices. Students applying for’migrant worker’ status must submit their contract, monthly payslips or invoices, bank statements, P45, and P60. When submitting an application, I would advise a student to contact Student Finance England and inquire about the required documentation.

Do parents or partners of pupils need to submit documentation to support an application?

Yes, students under 25 and those who are married or residing with a partner must submit the PFF2 form to support their application.

Once a student’s application has been approved, how long should they expect to wait before receiving funds?

Once enrolled and meeting attendance requirements, students should allow up to ten business days for payment to be processed from the date of approval. The ten days allow Student Finance England to verify national insurance and the university to corroborate attendance and registration.

How can a student pay back a postgraduate loan after receiving approval?

Every student will confer with a member of the university’s Finance Department upon enrollment. When they enrol, a payment plan will be generated. A direct debit will be established between the student and the university in accordance with the payment schedule provided by Student Finance England. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure payments are made on time.

How can a student rectify an error on their application if they make one?

If a mistake was made when submitting course information, a change of circumstance must be submitted. If the designated course date has not yet passed, they will be able to make the modification themselves. Students living on campus can request the change through their Student Finance portal. To do so, they must enter in to their Student Finance application, where “change your application” is displayed at the bottom of the homepage, under the application section. Please select “University/College Details Change” from the list on the subsequent page. The option to modify course information will become available. If it does not appear, the individual must complete Form C01 (change of circumstances). Please print and submit the completed form to Student Finance England. Alternately, they can request the form be mailed to them by dialling 0300 100 0607 and asking for Student Finance England. If the course start date has passed, we can only submit a change of circumstance after your application has been accepted and the student has been enrolled. Due to the need for reevaluation by Student Finance England, it may take up to six weeks for changes to be made following the submission of a change of circumstance.

Are there any additional student loans or grants available?

Each student’s household and circumstances are unique. Some students may qualify for additional grants, including Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs), Childcare grant, Parents’ Learning Allowance, and Adult Dependents’ Grant. I would suggest they contact Student Finance England directly for additional details. They will need proof for any additional grants.

What advice would you give students regarding application completion?

If they are uncertain about the information they are providing to Student Finance England, they should first contact Student Finance England directly, then their recruiter, and finally the University Finance Department. I would advise submitting all required documentation to Student Finance England as soon as feasible, including bank statements and council tax bills. Late evidence submission is the most common cause of delays.

THIS IS ONLY APPLICABLE TO UK RESIDENTS

FOR EU STUDENTS:

As an EU resident applying to study in the UK you could be eligible to the tuition fee being funded by student finance. However, EU residents who have come after August 2021, government funding scheme will stop and will not provide them with funding.
